A Little Context
Footnotes to the Absurd
On October 23, 2026, ship-tracking data showed a tanker carrying 40,000 metric tons of Russian diesel from Primorsk, Russia, bound for New York. It is expected to arrive on 11/07, four days after the midterm elections, and would be the first Russian petroleum-product shipment imported by the United States since the 2022 ban. The buyer and seller had not been publicly identified. Reuters
The cargo equals approximately 300,000 barrels. That represents roughly 2½ hours of U.S. transportation-diesel demand, or about two hours of total U.S. distillate consumption. The shipment follows the Trump-Putin diesel arrangement and the administration’s easing of restrictions on Russian fuel as it tries to lower prices.
The cartoon asks what “American energy dominance” means when even a few hours of relief arrive aboard a Russian tanker.
