Biggest Oil Deal

A Little Context

Footnotes to the Absurd

The announcement

On August 31, 2026, the White House proclaimed the “biggest oil deal in world history,” saying the United States had secured majority control over more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil reserves.

The administration said North American Blue Energy Partners, or NABEP, had received 100-year concessions covering 17 oil fields. It also said the U.S. government would receive a 35% stake in NABEP’s corporate parent, along with preferential access to its oil.

The victory lap

During his September 22, 2026 address to the United Nations, President Trump called it “perhaps the biggest deal ever made.”

What remained considerably smaller was the amount of publicly available documentation.

The missing details

NABEP is an operating private oil producer. The uncertainty concerns the extraordinary arrangement surrounding it. The administration had not publicly established the legal and financial structure behind its claims, and the corporate parent in which the government was promised a stake appeared not to exist as described.

Energy experts have also challenged whether all 65 billion barrels qualify as economically recoverable “proven reserves.” Developing many of the fields would require years of work, enormous investment and infrastructure that does not currently exist.

The cartoon

The other character’s line is invented satire. The joke contrasts the historic scale of Trump’s sales pitch with how little the public could independently verify about the corporate structure, reserve calculations and practical value of the deal.
