A Little Context
Footnotes to the Absurd
The lawsuit
On October 22, 2026, the Justice Department sued Alaska, seeking to block certification of a Democratic Senate victory over Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan while a second candidate with a similar name remained on the ballot. DOJ says its intervention is intended to protect election integrity.
The president’s role
On October 23, 2026, President Trump acknowledged personally directing the lawsuit: “I’m the one that said do it.”
That admission supplies the cartoon’s central contradiction: the president openly ordering legal action that could benefit his party while the department is expected to administer justice impartially.
The disputed claim
Republicans allege that Daniel J. Sullivan’s candidacy is intended to confuse voters and siphon support from the incumbent. He denies that allegation. Alaska’s Supreme Court previously allowed him on the ballot, which distinguishes the candidates by identifying the senator as the Republican incumbent.
The allegation of deliberate deception is not an established finding.
The cartoon
Trump’s telephone instruction and the lawyer’s draft are invented satire, not quotations or a reproduction of the filing. The framed “Independent Department of Justice” sign turns the institution’s supposed distance from partisan direction into the visual punch line.
The lawsuit is real. The independent decision-making is the question.
