A Little Context
Footnotes to the Absurd
On October 24, 2026, former President Barack Obama spoke at a Democratic campaign rally in Cleveland, Ohio, supporting gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton and former U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, who is running to return to the Senate.
Obama contrasted Trump’s attention to White House renovations with voters’ concerns about everyday costs. His description supplied the inspiration for this cartoon:
“I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but he seems very focused on home renovations. He should be on HGTV. The guy’s building a ballroom that’s bigger than the White House. Paved over the Rose Garden, put a helicopter pad on the South Lawn, and there’s gold everywhere! What’s up with the gold? Everything—more gold! … He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory. Just gold everywhere.”
About the Cartoon
“Mood Board” turns that comparison into a decorating assignment. Trump presents the two reference images as complementary inspirations, while the decorator’s notes reduce the brief to one instruction: more gold.
“Somewhere between these. Less restraint.” and the notebook entries are invented satirical dialogue and details, not actual remarks or documents.
