A Little Context
Footnotes to the Absurd
The United States and Israel began their war against Iran on February 28, 2026. In March, President Trump repeatedly described a conflict expected to last weeks. On March 31, when a reporter asked whether the United States would be done with the war soon, Trump answered: “I think two or three weeks.”
By October 23, 2026, the war was in its eighth month. Trump had also begun reframing his earlier estimates as referring to eliminating Iran’s nuclear threat rather than ending the overall conflict. PolitiFact’s review found that his original statements did not make that distinction.
The family road trip is fictional. The weary children represent voters waiting for an end to the journey, while the driver’s cheerful answer echoes Trump’s March estimate. The roadside sign measures elapsed time, not the distance still to go.
The joke is the gap between the confidence of the answer and the length of the ride. “Almost there” becomes less reassuring when the scenery keeps changing but the estimate never does.
